Argaum Chiefs 44 North Tawton 0
(February 24th 2001, k.o. 14:30
Bickleigh Down)

If you've been reading these match reports during the course of the season then this result should come as no surprise. When Argaum get their act together and play as a team they are more than a match for anyone in this league and this proved the case yesterday. On a beautiful winter's afternoon at Bickleigh the Chiefs systematically took apart their opponents to win by a very comfortable margin and probably felt they could have scored more.

The defence was once again solid and was tested at the start of game as Tawton applied early pressure playing down the slope. Argaum dug in and cleared their line and moving into their opponents half began to look dangerous. Not for the first time this season the Chiefs had the upper hand at the set-scrum, to such an extent that they were able to steal the majority of the Tawton ball against the head. The mid-Devon side were starting to concede penalties and it was only a matter of time before the points would come. Danny Morgan twisted and wriggled his way over for the first try from a quickly taken penalty, then Mark Foster added one in the corner after a rampaging run from Paul Venkort. Crucially, Argaum didn't take their foot off the pedal and scored two tries in quick succession, both from Paul Collins, the second try being converted by Darren Wills. Tawton came back, but the Chiefs were once again resolute in defence and turned round at the interval with a commanding 22-0 lead.

Dominic Hill replaced Andy Critchley at outside half and soon showed that he had lost none of his deft touches and strong running after such a long absence from the game. The gaps started to appear and the backs began to enjoy themselves. After a good run by Kier Wilkinson and quickly recycled possession, the ball was spread wide and Phil Hall scored under the posts. Darren Wills converted this one and a few minutes later galloped in from long range and also converted his own try. Danny Morgan, who's elusive running caused North Tawton all sorts of problems, then grabbed his second try of the game from a 60 yard dash. Dominic Hill rounded off the scoring with a neatly taken drop goal to take the score to 44-0. In the last quarter the game became a bit scrappy as North Tawton fought back, but Argaum's excellent discipline in defence meant that they kept their first 'clean sheet' of the season. This result keeps Argaum's hopes alive in staving off relegation (although they are still reliant on other people's results) but is also a much needed confidence booster for the club. (RB)
