The Chiefs were forced into a couple of changes before kick-off due to some last minute withdrawals which saw Mark Foster going to the back row and Darren Truscott coming in at hooker. After tentative early minutes Argaum found themselves on the back foot as Rockies had a good opening spell which soon brought them a penalty in front of the posts. In what was otherwise generally a clean game, a skirmish between the two packs saw Mark Richardson sin-binned midway through the first half.
With their opponents using the conditions cleverly, the Chiefs continued to find themselves pinned in their own half and defending a series of tap penalties with a man short finally took its toll when PRWF went for the first try of the game. With the try going unconverted Argaum started to fight back with some good running from Darren Truscott and Paul Venkort ably supported by the backs. One such foray gave Argaum's first kickable penalty which Darren Wills duly stepped up to strike over. Turning around at the interval trailing by 8-3 and with the conditions and slope now in their favour, Argaum fancied their chances, and came back into the game.
However it was Rockies who drew first blood in the second half with a neatly taken drop goal to extend their lead once again to two scores. Argaum's lineout was delivering some good posession, particularly from poacher-turned-gamekeeper Mark Foster who was like a leaping salmon. After one particularly good catch and drive which saw Argaum gain considerable yardage, Lee McDowell burst from the fringe of the maul to scamper over for the try. Darren Wills conversion went in off the posts and it was now 11-10 to the home side.
Argaum started to take control, gaining the upper hand up front particularly when employing the rolling maul, while good runs from Phil Hall, Phil Morgan and Kier Wilkinson tested the PRWF defence. All this pressure produced penalty chances for Darren Wills, who converted one to put Argaum into the lead while pushing another wide. The Chiefs were now quite happy to kick for position and run down the clock and appeared to be in control but for a late flurry by Rockies which saw them squander a penalty chance late on. Argaum cleared their lines however to secure a cup final meeting with Devonport Services 2nds on April 25th at the Rectory.(RB)
