Buckfastleigh Ramblers 20 Argaum Chiefs 15
(April 7th 2001, k.o. 15:00
Elburton)

For reasons varying from the International at Twickenham to having the 'snip', the Chiefs were without a few key players for this hurriedly re-arranged league fixture at the neutral venue of Elburton.

However captain Andy Critchley was able to gather together quite a useful looking side with Tommy Cooper returning to the back row and Mark Hunt making his first appearance of the season on the wing! Buckfastleigh had shown great improvement of late, but the Chiefs were confident that they could secure an all important victory.

Playing with the slight wind advantage in the first-half Argaum could not seem to get out of first gear as the game was taken to them by the Ramblers. Neither team looked like threatening the try-line until the Buckfastleigh outside half grabbed an interception try from just inside the Argaum half. Argaum came back though with an unconverted try Tommy Cooper but conceded a second try just before the interval after a well worked Buckfastleigh move.

Turning round at 14-5 down, Argaum tore into their opponents, the pack hitting the rucks with much more venom than in the first-half. There followed a series of narrow misses near the Bucks line before Darren Truscott squeezed over the line, Darren Wills missing the very difficult conversion. Scrum-half Danny Morgan had to be replaced after receiving a very nasty cut around the eye, Mark Hunt slotting into the role. For a 20 minute period in the second half Argaum became very frustrated as seemingly every decision in that period seemed to go against them. With a kicker like Buckfastleigh have, conceding that many penalties means you're going to start shipping points, and sure enough 2 penalties seemed to have put the game beyond reach. Argaum's character this season cannot be questioned and Darren Truscott came back with a try to set up what should have been a rousing finale. However Buckfastleigh's defence was excellent and never allowed the Chiefs to set up a further sustained period of pressure.

Once again this season Argaum have lost a game by a few points and outscored their opponents 3 tries to 2. The main problem this season as in most recent seasons has been consistency of team selection. Argaum simply haven't been able to field the same team 2 weeks running and that lack of continuity has meant that it has usually taken half the game before they get into their stride. If they can acheive the consistency then Argaum could be a force to be reckoned with and hopefully this can be shown in the RNEC Cup Final on April 25th and in the final league fixture away to Totnes.
