Plymouth Argaum Annual invitation Chairman’s Vs Presidents rugby match was played on Saturday 15 May. This year the club decided to use the game to raise money for the club charity, Help for Heroes.

A large crowd gathered at Bickleigh down to watch Argaum’s teams who were sporting new kit emblazed with the Help for Heroes logo clash in a hard fought end of season match. For “a laugh” both sides decided that those who scored the tries, must attempt the conversion through a drop goal to add the extra’s, this filled most of the forwards with dread at the prospect of personal embarrassment.  The game was started by a Traditional Kiwi Haki led by New Zealander Mike "Aussie" Schaab, this was going to be his last game for the club as he is moving back to New Zealand soon after 3 years at the club.

The President’s XV, run by Club Captain Paul Symons, took an early lead with tries from Wike Mood and Martin Cooper; however the Chairman’s XV, under the leadership of 62 year Club Chairman Chris Sillitoe stole a cheeky try through Matt Glastonbury just before half time. Paul Symons’s “men in black” were having most of the play and were looking in good shape for the 2nd half while the Chairman’s XV received a serious half time speaking to.

Argaum’s Chairman’s team talk at half time seemed to work wonders, as ten minutes into the 2nd half they had two more tries on the board from Mark Turner and Darren Revell (Argaum’s Player of the season). This was followed by New Zealander Mike “Aussie” Schaab going over for another, which was converted. Chris Hamer responded with try for the Presidents XV and this was followed by large amounts of pressure from the Men in Black. Prop Mark O’kane then finally pushed over for five more points. This was then converted with a stylish drop goal, something of a rarity from a prop. With the score now 22-27 with 10 mins to go and the Presidents XV firing on all cylinders, a draw seemed very possible however in the last minute Argaum veteran Mark “Whisky” Walker sneaked over for a try under the posts, however the less said about the attempted conversion the better.

The final score was Argaum Chairman’s XV 32 – 22 Argaum Presidents XV

It was a fine capper to what has been the most successful season Plymouth Argaum have experienced for 8 years and this event raised £349.03. A cheque was handed to Help for Heroes representative, Lisa De-Lar after the match. There was also great support from the Plymouth rugby community too, with representatives from Plymouth Barbarians, Devonport Services, Tamar Saracens, Old Technicians, OPM’s, Ivybridge RFC and even Plymouth Titans Rugby league all coming along to play. The match ball was sponsored by Plymouth Trophyman (www.plymouthtrophyman.com). Plymouth Argaum are now recruiting for next season and training starts at the end of June. Anyone interested should contact Club Captain Paul Symons.
