The pitches at Bickleigh Down have seen many good players over the years but it is not very often they have been graced by a British Lion and for the home side to triumph on such an occasion must be an even rarer event.

However that's what happened on Saturday when Argaum welcomed Welsh tourists Heol-Y-Cyw, who now feature former British Lion and Wales centre Allan Bateman in their line-up. Now 46, 'The Clamp' as he was known during a glittering career in both rugby codes, was supposed to retire last season but couldnt resist a few more run-outs for the Pencoed side this season. Argaum, fielding a number of colts and a few friends from St Columba Torpoint, ran out 12-10 winners in sweltering heat. Perhaps more importantly the visitors received a warm Argaum welcome in the clubhouse afterwards, which judging by the number of sore heads the following morning, was an epic night.

Argaum were presented with a copy of their guest's Centenary History, 100 Years Of Village Rugby, signed by Allan Bateman, and have been invited for a return visit to South Wales. (Photos : Toby Liberson)
