Oxford Harlequins hosted local side Plymouth Argaum RFC this weekend as Argaum were on tour in the city. Oxford, fielding players from all 4 of their senior teams were odds on favourites to beat Argaum who’ve had a difficult year.

The Oxford side, of National League 3 South West started strongly as expected and found themselves 14-0 to the good after only five minutes as their scrum half powered through the Argaum defence to score under the posts. It seemed a cricket score was on the cards. Argaum’s forwards then turned over a scrum and Argaum No 8 Gareth Chilcott broke the Oxford line and put Paddy Gibson through for a simple try. Argaum Captain Paul Symons  then crashed his way through the Oxford defence to go over for another just 3 minutes later however he was adjudged to of knocked on as he touched the ball down. At half time the score was 19-5 to the Oxfordshire side.

After the re-start Oxford put the Argaum line under immense pressure and only some strong defence and hard talking by Nick Handcock and Ben Hoskins kept Argaum in the game. Oxford did finally break the line by some quite hands in the back line putting their winger over to score. With the score now at 24-5 the game looked to be slipping away from Argaum who had worked so hard to keep the score down. Argaum then found their second wind and started putting together some wonderful play through full back Mike Wood and Scotsman Ian Niesh linking up well. 3 tries for Argaum from Paddy Gibson and Ged Cowen brought the score to 24-22 with only 5 minutes to play.

Argaum scrum half Gary Michael went over for another try but was adjudged to of been held up. Argaum Captain Paul Symons then crashed through three Oxford players to score and another try with the last play of the game was score by Paddy Gibson which gave the Argaum players an unlikely win which they won’t be forgetting anytime soon. The Oxford Captain nominated Argaum’s fly half Ben Stanbury as man of the match in what was his first senior outing for Argaum in the position of standoff.
