Argaum Joins Pitchero

Written by

The club has another branch to its online presence with the launch this week of a new site on the Pitchero system. The format, which is used by the majority of clubs around the country, has a social media feel enabling information such as match reports, photos, videos and events to be shared easily. It also links into a central database of fixtures and allows teams to maintain statistics such as appearances, scorers etc. The aim at present is for the Pitchero site to complement this one along with our Facebook Pages and Twitter Feed, so that we have the best online presence as we continue to develop the club. This site will continue to be updated and added to in the meantime. We have a huge archive of material and have more historical content to add over the summer as we continue to celebrate the club's 125th Year. In order for Pitchero to be a success we need people to sign up to the system as players, supporters, team admins etc so please visit to check it out.

With many still recovering from last weekend's epic senior tour to Brighton, the attention turns to the Bank Holiday Weekend at Argaum with two touring sides from that great rugby county of Gloucestershire. After contrasting results against Shottery and Cricklade it is the turn of Cotham Park from the Clifton area to sample the famous Argaum hospitality. Park, who ply their trade in Gloucester 2 and finished 4th this season, have a party of between 20 and 30 making the trip for the match which kicks off at 2pm. Note there is an Argaum Players Meeting, reviewing the season's progress, at the club beforehand starting at 12pm, please make every effort to be there if you are involved in the senior set-up.

On Sunday the Under 14s entertain Dursley RFC who are no strangers to Argaum having visited before in 2007-08 to play what was then the Under 15s in April of that season. That Argaum team, featuring a number of our current seniors and under the stewardship of Dave Sansom, had made the journey to Gloucestershire earlier in the season for a Sunday morning fixture, some away trip! Dursley are bringing a large contingent of players and supporters (up to 60 in total) so if you can get along to welcome them and support our lads it would be much appreciated.

If all that wasn't enough there is also the Plymouth Combination Sevens on Sunday and it is also the 4th anniversary of the Plymouth Argaum Social Club with plenty of entertainment lined up over the weekend.

With last week seeing the completion of the Devon 2 League programme with a very good performance at home to Exeter University you could be forgiven for thinking that the season would be winding down. However there is still plenty more rugby at Argaum this season starting tomorrow as we entertain another touring side in the form of Wiltshire side Cricklade RFC. This follows on from last week's visit from Staffordshire side Shottery RFC who played the Wanderers and if last week was anything to go by there is sure to be another great day in the clubhouse and town later.

Meanwhile the Under 14s take part in the Devon Festival at Plymstock and Sunday and are looking to recapture some of the excellent form they have shown this season, you may have seen some pictures of them in the Herald this week as they played Lankelly-Fowey (match report).

All this is a prelude to yet another busy week at the club with The Ellis Cup Final on Wednesday, more tourists next Saturday and a final match for the Under 14s at Topsham.

Put a date in your diary for Saturday 10th December as the club holds a special match to celebrate its 125th season. The match will be played against a Plymouth Combination XV and it is hoped that a number of the club's past players and officials as well as friends from other clubs will be able to attend. There will be pitch side refreshments to keep everyone happy at the match whilst the celebrations will continue in the clubhouse. There will be an after match buffet for all players, supporters and guests and after some (very brief) speeches a good old fashioned rugby club sing song with Pete Duff as Choirmaster. Rising stars Unfunkable, with our very own Sam Russell on bass, then take to the stage, check out their website to find out more aboout what you can expect from this talented band. The night is rounded off by a disco until late and all the fun associated with a good social at Argaum's clubhouse.

A poster for the event can be downloaded from the bottom of this article.

There is another feast of rugby this weekend at Plymouth Argaum with a double senior home fixture at the centre-piece. After a decent performance in the Devon Cup at Plymstock last week the Chiefs take on Plympton Victoria (2:30) in what is a vital clash between the bottom two clubs in Tribute Devon Two. At the same time the Wanderers entertain DHSOB Wizards in a rematch of their Plymouth Combination Merit Table encounter at the start of the season, any players wishing to play are urged to contact Mark Handley. Also on Saturday afternoon, the Colts travel to Tavistock whilst on Sunday morning (11am) the Under 14s will be hosting Devonport Services. All four teams are actively recruiting and will be distributing a number of posters across the city over the coming weeks as well as embarking on an advertising campaigin in the Evening Herald.

Argaum Colts have had a succesful couple of seasons but with the majority of players moving up to the seniors this year and a small number of Under 16s coming through, we have not yet been in position to field a full team this season. Our neighbours from across the Tamar, Saltash RFC, have also suffered similar problems, therefore the two clubs have decided to pool resources and play as a combined team. This does present a number of difficulties in terms of positions and training, but so far they have played 3 matches against Liskeard, Plymstock and Falmouth and although yet to win have given a decent account of themselves. More importantly it has enabled players to continue playing rugby and prevented two sides from folding. A number of clubs seem to be struggling with this particular age-group and sadly Totnes have already withdrawn their Colts side this season. It is hoped that with the interest generated from the World Cup and further recruitment that both sides will be nearer to full-strength by the second half of the season, until then the respective coaches and players appear to be keen for the collaboration to continue. Saltash had a similar arrangement with Liskeard last season but it is thought that this may be unique for two teams from different counties to have done so. Argaum have previously joined forces with Stonehouse to enter an Under 10 festival as 'The Tiger Sharks' and such imagination in the interest of the wider game should be applauded. Players who are aged 16 to 18 (School Year 12 and 13) who are interested in joining should contact Neil Bond (07790836634) at Plymouth Argaum, Mark Hancock (07751702553) at Saltash or send an email enquiry. Both teams train on Wednesday evenings and play on Saturday afternoons.

Plymouth Argaum begin senior pre-season training on Tuesday 5th July (7pm) with renewed optimism ahead of their 125th Anniversary season. Club restructuring has seen a new Senior Rugby Committee formed under the Chairmanship of Gary Michael, whilst there is new coaching team led by Dave Sansom, who takes over from Argaum stalwart Howell Phillips. Paying tribute to Phillips, Michael said "We would publicly like to thank Howell for his magnificent work over the last few seasons who, along with Team Manager Dave Fuge, have developed the senior set-up enormously. Howell has made a magnificent contribution to Argaum over the years as both a player and a coach and we hope that he will continue to be involved with the club." Senior Training will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays and there is a belief that with a large number of colts stepping up there will be good competition for places in the two senior teams that Argaum will be operating.

The proposed new club structure and rules changes were overwhelmingly passed at last night's Club AGM. The restructure involves a Main Club Governance Committee looking after the club's facilities with sub-committees for Senior, Junior and Cubs reporting to it. This should allow for committee meetings to be more focused and for matters to be dealt with efficiently. The Club Rule Changes were passed with some minor ammendments. For more information on the details of the restructuring, see the website forum. Steve Barnes (President), Chris Sillitoe (Chairman), Mark Handley (Vice Chairman), Ann Sillitoe (Hon Sec) and Neil Bond (Hon Treasurer) were voted back into their posts whilst Mark Gibbings was voted in as the new Club Captain. After the AGM, the first meeting of the Senior Committee took place in order to form a Senior Committee, details of those posts will be published shortly.
