Season 2000-01

Half-back Andy Critchley was the 1st XV skipper in an eventful season that ultimately ended in disappointment as the Chiefs finished at the foot of Devon 2 and were relegated. Prince Rock put an early end to Tetley Bitter Vase hopes at Bull Point with a 12-0 win and followed it up with a similar score in the league later that month; the first exchanges in a series of tight encounters between the sides during the season.

Nottingham Tour 2001

Another fine tour this time arranged by Paul Venkort. After the previous year's crucifixion in Cardiff there was talk of duckings in the Trent until it was realised how polluted that particular river is.

(April 25th 2001, k.o. 19:30
The Rectory)

Yet again Argaum finish runners-up in a Cup Final, but there was plenty of positives to take away from this match. After such a disrupted season and a generally poor showing in the league the Chiefs held up the honour of Devon Two by producing a performance full of pride, commitment and no little skill.

For reasons varying from the International at Twickenham to having the 'snip', the Chiefs were without a few key players for this hurriedly re-arranged league fixture at the neutral venue of Elburton.

In a competition as close as this, the winning team will usually be decided by the effort put in to the preparation, and so it was. Argaum's perennial problem of lack of numbers at training nights was reflected not in individual performance with all players showing total committment to the cause but in the combined effort.

It was a case of fourth time lucky for the Chiefs as they finally overcame their fellow Division 2 opponents in this RNEC Cup semi-final. All three previous meetings have been close but ill-discipline had cost Argaum dear on each occasion, but this time, on a mudbath of pitch, Argaum's nerve held.

If you've been reading these match reports during the course of the season then this result should come as no surprise. When Argaum get their act together and play as a team they are more than a match for anyone in this league and this proved the case yesterday. On a beautiful winter's afternoon at Bickleigh the Chiefs systematically took apart their opponents to win by a very comfortable margin and probably felt they could have scored more.

(January 6th 2001, k.o. 14:30

On the Twelfth Day Of Christmas both teams struggled to get over the indulgences of the Festive period but nevertheless produced an entertaining encounter at Elburton. Much credit must go to the referee for keeping the game flowing, while both teams played in the right spirit.
